SWATI is once again among the few nakshatras which are represented by a single star. And that star is known as ARCTURUS (ALPHA-BOOTIS). With a visual magnitude of 0.16, Arcturus is the third brightest among the stars in the night sky.
Ancient Vedic seers saw it as the abode of SARASWATHI, the goddess of learning.
Its symbol is a 'YOUNG PLANT SHOOT BLOWN BY THE WIND". The wind symbolism suggests the airy quality of this nakshatra which promotes restless-ness, adaptability, skill-ness in using the mind and a roaming disposition. Whereas, the young plant symbolism suggests delicacy.
Its main deity is VAYU, the god of wind. All of Vayu's qualities, can be seen manifested through HANUMAN, son of Vayu & one of the central characters in the vedic-epic, RAMAYANA.
Hanuman's qualities like extreme strength, morality, strong sense of ethics, moderation, fairness, intelligence and loyalty apply to the highest aspect of Swati's functioning.
It is Hanuman's extreme loyalty and devotion to RAMA, which still remains the strongest example of unconditional and selfless service is strongly entrenced in our minds. It is no wonder then that the planest of service. i.e.SATURN, reaches maximum exaltation in Swati.
It belongs to the Butcher's class. Even wind can be a highly destructive and unforgiving force when it takes the form of cyclones and tornadoes. And Swati can be quite ruthless in its approach, especially when it gains strength and power over the passage of time.
The body part it represents is the Chest, which emphasizes its connection with the air element and the process of breathing.
It is a Female nakshatra & a Deva Ganam. Swati represents the female aspect of its planetary ruler, Rahu. Its directions are connected with the West, South-West & the South-East.
Worship of Saraswati is the best remedial worship.
In the universal scheme of things, Swati relates to 'PRADHVAMSA SHAKTI" - the power to disperse like the wind. No wonder, it is said also that Swati can be seen as the universal vacuum cleaner!
Swati is related to SAGE MARICHI, one of the seven celestial sages looking after the affairs of our galaxy. The name of this sage translates into "LIGHT". The "lightness" (as in swiftness) seems to connect well with Swati, considering that Air is light element.
